King and Queen of Hearts

We're primarily into e-mail/telephone correspondence at PG, but when we send mail, we pay attention to our stamp selection. Back in the day, we'd designate the "boring" stamps for bills and paying landlords. Our current favorites are the Love: King and Queen of Hearts. They were designed for the Postal Service by Derry Noyes with illustration by Jeanne Greco. (Derry was the Art Director of the Eames Stamps that we also loved, while Jeanne designed lettering for Barbie as well as wine/food labels for Coppola's line.) We like this series for their muted palette and the smart repeat. According to a recent press release, "when the project was commissioned, [Jean asked] if she had to do a single stamp or if she could do a two-stamp design. 'After all, love takes two,' she reasoned."

Doodle 4 Google 2009

This year's winner of the Doodle 4 Google contest was 6th grader Christin Engelberth's "A New Beginning". This year's theme was "What I Wish For The World". The judges panel included Michael Bierut, Steven Heller, Ellen Lupton, and Clement Mok, among others. As if having your work featured on Google's homepage for 24 hours isn't enough, Christin's grand prize includes a $15,000 college scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for her San Antonio school.

Bring it on…

At Pinkergreen, we love a little stiff competition. You should see us (or some of us, or some of our spouses) at game night… yikes?! That said, I came across a few graphic design competitions this week that definitely look like good opportunities for us to bring our "A" game.

Cause/Affect sponsored by AIGA San Fran "is a biennial graphic design competition which celebrates the work of designers and organizations who set out to positively impact our society. All work entered in the competition must promote or support social good and actively engage in enriching our lives. It can raise awareness about a cause or condition. It can celebrate an arts institution or event. All we ask is that it doesn’t contribute directly to the profit of a commercial organization."
Lori from W.E. Andrews sent this one my way yesterday. The American Graphic Design Awards presented by Graphic Design USA Magazine, and sponsored by Newpage. "It honors outstanding new work of all kinds in 23 categories from print and packaging to internet and interactive design."

BU CFA School of Visual Arts Senior Show

On Friday, the senior graphic design class at Boston University had their gallery opening for their Senior Show. Pinkergreen has watched this class grow and evolve over the past two years, having participated in their end of semester critiques. The graduating class of 2009 has some very strong designers and these 3 graduates had some pretty interesting topics for their thesis projects. Its busy in Boston this week with graduation ceremonies all over the city (and the SOWA Art Walk), but if you have a chance, you should definitely pop into the GSU Sherman Gallery at 755 Commonwealth Avenue, 2nd Floor and check out these budding graphic designers.

unexpected pop of color

Spotted these at the grocery store. Thought the color combos were unexpected and fun. If I were in the market for "cuttle fish in sauce", you know what I'd buy.

Prickly Pair

I'm loving these Prickly pair chairs by Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers. Crazy chair art! Maybe someone will get me one for an anniversary gift? (hint hint)

Lucky Sevens!

Mad for Magenta

I'm loving "Misfit Dior"– this week's feature in NY Magazine's Look Book. Her Magenta/Red/Navy combo is rockin. Going to work the palette in an upcoming project!
