I.O.U.S.A.

Really sharp info-graphics from Brian Oakes are prominently featured in the film I.O.U.S.A. The Village Voice is calling this film "an inconvenient Truth for the Debt Crisis." The trailor doesn't show much of Oakes' contributions to the movie, but the Design Observer interview featuring a sample reel of the graphics can be found here.

One more reason to love Paris.

I happened upon this Parisian artists' work this morning via Apartment Therapy who featured her home in France. Being a knitter, I'm naturally drawn to her work which has taken our grandmothers' craft and turned it into an ethereal, comforting fine art. So gorgeous! I found her work inspiring, especially as the temps start dropping and I pick up my needles once again for the cool winter months ahead. Aurelie Mathigot has transformed the traditional doily into cozy candlesticks, comforting seats, and soft silverware? I love the tree-hugging wrap, entitled "Protect Me" so fitting for the "green movement."

Design Dish: Melissa Jordan

Design Dish is back, and with a brand new look. This week, it is with much excitement and honor, that I'm featuring Melissa Jordan, Founding Partner and Creative Director of Pinkergreen Design. Not only is Melissa a creative genius, constantly drumming up new ideas and techniques, but she's an excellent baker and consistently keeps our office stocked with treats. I think you'll find her inspiring, I know I do.

What's your job? What do you do?
Creative Director, Pinkergreen Design

What's been inspiring you lately?
I've been to NY a lot lately. Trends, people watching, good food, great spaces... As cliché as it sounds, I always seem to have those "Only in New York" moments. Every time I'm there I see something new.

Who's album is on repeat on your iPod?
My iPod's been retired for now. But at work I'm all about Pandora. My favorite "QuickMix" includes Bjork, Yo La Tengo, Diana Krall, Lemonheads and Mary J. Blige.

What are you reading?
I'm not gonna lie, I read chick-lit all summer. Let's leave it at that.

What are your Top 5 Bookmarked sites?
New York Times for current events
New York Magazine for "culture"
Design*Sponge for inspiration
I'm always on Orbitz and Travelzoo looking for deals... I have a serious case of wanderlust.

Been to any good gallery or museum exhibits lately?
I've seen a lot of art this year! I caught the "Recognize!" exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery.
I thought Kehinde Wiley's paintings for Hip Hop Honors were fun. The installation piece by Shinique Smith was also pretty cool.

How do you unplug?
I love to watch movies. Austen or Horror, depending on my mood.

Flora and Birds

I love the color palette of the Phoebe Bird Rug at Anthropologie.

Carfun footprint?

Calculate your "Carfun" footprint with MINI's new site. I don't really know the actual metrics they've used, but it calculates how "fun" your car is to drive vs. its impact on the environment. I'm sure that in the end, no car is more fun than a MINI. It's still cool to play around.

Diana

I'm getting a little bored with my digital camera these days... Thinking about going retro. The Diana F+ lets you create shots with a vintage feel. The Lomographic Society says the resulting images are "dreamy, gorgeous, color-drenched, sometimes-blurry, and often-mindblowing". (Not to toot their own horn or anything!) The Diana+ Dreamer is a special edition created for Urban Outfitters. Isn't it sweet?

Hot! Hot! Hot!

I saw a great design competition today for a new Tea Kettle design. Sponsored by World Kitchen, makers of the American classic, Corelle, and endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America, this contest offers a great opportunity for 3-D designers to get creative and reinvent and everyday object. Don't worry, I myself, won't be entering... me and 3-D don't mix. Maybe the AIGA will endorse a contest for graphic designers to do the packaging... Have fun ID guys & girls...

Oenophiles rejoice

A bunch of us went to Clo wine bar in the Time Warner Center a couple of weeks ago. Partially for the wine tasting, but mostly to try out their cool projection tables. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen. The best way to describe the interactive tables is if you picture the "dock" feature on Macs and replace the application icons with wine bottles. You can search their wine database by price, grape and region. I found that feature especially helpful because I'm still learning about wine.
The staff was very helpful and walked us through our first round:
Each of us were given a chip card which stores our individual tabs.
The wines are given location codes– so once you've selected the wine that you'd like to taste you mosey on over, insert your card and voila!

Clo describes their concept:
Clo’s carefully curated wine list is created for oenophiles + casual wine lovers alike. 96 Wines, cult, boutique + rare vintages, are presented in custom made, perfect temperature + humidity controlled dispensing machines, allocating 2 oz tasting pours. Patrons use a prepaid debit style card for their pour. Tasting prices range from $3 to over $100, ensuring that every level of consumer will fully enjoy the clo experience.
The bar was started by Sommelier Andrew Bradbury and the space was designed by NY firm 2x4. It sounds like they are looking to take the concept global... I just hope it makes it to Boston.

Get off the tracks, Jack...

Driving behind an MBTA bus this morning I saw an add for Amtrak's Northeast Regional services. Either someone for Amtrak didn't do their research or someone for Obama didn't do theirs. But come on, people, are these two logos too similar OR what?
Apparently, I'm not the only one who thought so. Upon googling the Amtrak logo, I found several other bloggers commenting on the same topic. (so either I'm a little behind the times, or just been stuck behind the bus...)

He's Baaack.

One of our favorite Beantown-based illustrators, Leo Espinosa, wrote us to say that his show is opening this Friday, September 12, 2008 at the New England Gallery of Latin American Arts. I'm definitely going to try and make it so I can tell you all about it. But here's the artist's statement for now. Congrats Leo!
