Pittsburgh Arts N'at...

Most people are unaware of the amazing arts and cultural scene in Pittsburgh. Besides being a sports town, they're a hot bed for emerging arts and music. In the 2 years that I have lived there I've been constantly inspired by the fantastic work that is being produced there. These are just a few of my favorite artists in the 'burgh:

1. Josh Tonies, Bermuda Tesseract, inkjet print

2. Andy Kehoe, Shelter of Beauty

3. Etui Etui, Swing, screen print
4. Brett Davis, untiled, oil

Moustache Championships

The Handlebar Club proudly presents the World Beard & Moustache Championship 2007

One of the club's main objectives is "to encourage and celebrate standards of excellence in the growth, design and presentation of facial hair." I can only imagine how much work went into taming some of those ’staches!

thanks for the heads up Damian!

The Buzz on Bees

There's a great article on Burt's Bees in The Times archive. We like to learn the history behind our favorite products.. turns out, Burt's is old school green. The company was started by a graphic artist and a bearded beekeeper named Burt. Go figure.

Magtable

Check out this cool coffee table which doubles as a magazine rack... I might worry about some of my $20+ design magazines getting spilled on... but then again, that's why God created coasters.

Woodstock Fair: A Typographic Essay by Ryan Wade

Who knew that in addition to the plethora of shirtless men, women in turquoise fishnet tops, Jordan Knight serenading the thirty-something moms with his NKOTB hits, there is really quite a bit of interesting typography to be found at the Grand Old Woodstock Fair in Connecticut. Whether Wade (talented designer, retired landscaper and budding photographer) was aware or not, nearly half of his snapshots captured type treatments found throughout the fair. The other half were the shirtless men and roast beef sandwiches. Hmm.

There was the Americana slab-serif type of the Poultry, Rabbit and Cattle barns.
The modern Futura at the poop exhibit.
There was your classic airbrush, and many other typefaces, whose names shall not be mentioned—because I don't know them, that contributed to the pastoral, sugary, and sweaty countryside of Woodstock.Typography aside, the fair is really about people watching. In which case, the photography exhibit would be incomplete without these gems.

Bloom Cards

Bloom paper pop-up cards from Artecnica are so glam. I think the patterns and color choices are so sophisticated–they save the "blooms" from being too girly.
