One Good Bumblebee

Our good friend Cara directed us over to One Good Bumblebee, an online shop that grew from a pretty fun blog of the same name. Katey Nicosia(started the bee) makes sure there's a good mix of crafts(her passion) and other treasures. Great place to buy a gift for a BFF you haven't seen since school :)

I'm crushin' on:

c'mon baby light my fire

I spotted these babies at a Walmart in upstate NY last weekend. They stopped me dead in my tracks(a feat if you know how A.D.D. super-ultra-mega-stores make me). Light My Fire Sporks are the sickest utensil designs. The spoon-fork-knife combo "brings a bit of civilization to the wild and a bit of the wild to civilization." They come in 11 colors (yes, there are pink AND green ones) sold individually($3.00) or in a set of four($9.95).

¡Ay Caramba!

The Simpsons Movie comes out on 7/27/07! The movie's site is pretty cool because you can create your own Simpsons avatar which pops up around town. (That's me having a beer with Homer)
In case you hadn't heard, Springfield VT will host the hometown premiere. (Springfield, MA came in fourth boooooo.)

Philip-Lorca diCorcia @ the ICA

We went to the ICA Boston to see the Philip-Lorca diCorcia exhibit last week. The show was huge: it took up the entire West Gallery and contains over 100 photographs. Definitely an impressive body of work from a New England artist (b. Hartford, attended the Museum School here in Boston). The diCorcia show runs til September 3, 2007.

The ICA is an amazing space, I just wish there were more art... For a great night, head over on Target Free Thursday Nights, when, as the name explains, the museum is free. Afterwards, go to Lucky's for mini-burgers and a cocktail.

You'll be so full of cultcha'.

Camel No.9

Well folks, I have got to say I am not a fan of cigarettes, and I had never bought a pack in my life…That is until a few weeks ago when I saw the Camel no.9 cigarette packs on the shelf at Seven Eleven. I actually went ahead and bought both the regular and menthol flavored smokes. The design of the box is awesome – a simple and sleek design using black with hot pink accents, and with a good amount of empty space, the box looks very sophisticated. The menthol box uses a mint green border to differentiate itself from the regular flavor. There has been some scrutiny that it was aimed to single out girls and young women…well duh! I won’t defend smoking at all, and the seriousness of lung cancer cannot be undermined, but the design of these boxes totally nailed their target audience. After all, graphic design is a communication tool and for this reason the Camel no.9 boxes are great design. The boxes I bought won’t be opened or smoked but hey, Camel got a non-smoker to buy two boxes. My menthol box has actually been put in the little 5”x 5” Ikea shadowbox frame and put on my wall.

Artist Spotlight: Cheryl Adams

Cheryl Adams: a life long artist and art department head at Quabbin Regional High School, will be retiring next year after a thirty-five year teaching career. At the end of her career as a teacher her artwork as an artist continues to grow and evolve. She is an amazing artist, inspiration, and coincidentally also happens to be my mother. Cheryl recently had two pieces of art accepted into the 72nd Regional Exhibition of Art and Craft at the Fitchburg Art Museum, View to Pleasant Street, a pastel and Hay Bales, a watercolor (left). Hay Bales earned an honorable mention at the show and was also one of my favorite pieces of artwork in the whole show (completely unbiased!) The Fitchburg Art Museum’s Regional Exhibition of Art and Craft is one of the oldest exhibitions of it’s kind in New England. It is open to artists and craftsmen who live within approximately 25 miles of Fitchburg or who are members of the Museum. The exhibit is up until September 9, 2007.

Who or what inspires you?
“My main inspiration is nature, which I think comes from my walks on the street seeing the seasons change along with the changing farming seasons. It’s funny, the art that I tend to like isn’t really the art that I create.”

How do you like to spend your spare time?
"Again, I like to spend my spare time outside in the garden. Today was a very steamy day and I tried to photograph places that seemed cool and defied the summer heat. Working in the garden and always being surrounded by nature is what goes into my art."

Do you have any goals for yourself as an artist?
"I think one of the things I'm working on right now in recycling art. Using media to get to another media by creating artists books for example. To have the experience of doing that art and then recycling it and creating it again with a different look; the art is not just one moment but is again made into another creation. The greatest gift and artist can have is to be curious."

iPhone the Musical

Copyright © Apple Inc.

Well.. It's here. After all the frenzy and hype... It's here: the iPhone has made people lose their minds. Don't get me wrong, I want one. I really really want one. I just don't want to have to give up a kidney to get one.

Instead, I'm having way more fun finding iPhone-craze related entertainment such as:
David Pogue's iPhone the Musical is pretty damn funny.
And finally, for those of you willing to resort to dark arts, Satan is selling an 8GB on eBay for $6,666,666.0... but I'm sure he'd be willing to barter for souls.
